Giới từ đứng trước đại từ quan hệ
Văn nói thường để giới từ ở cuối: the colleague (who) I spoke to. Văn viết trang trọng đưa giới từ lên trước which (vật) hoặc whom (người): the colleague to whom I spoke.
- Sau giới từ không dùng who, that, và không bỏ đại từ.
- Không lặp giới từ ở cuối: the city in which I live, không in which I live in.
- Cụm động từ như look after, give up giữ giới từ ở cuối: the children she looks after.

Chọn giới từ nào?
Giới từ lấy từ cụm trong mệnh đề quan hệ: depend on → on which; responsible for → for which; talk to sb → to whom. Nhớ các cụm cố định: the extent to which, the rate at which, the conditions under which, the period during which.
Với lượng từ, sau dấu phẩy phải là of whom / of which; viết …, most of them live abroad là nối hai câu bằng dấu phẩy (sai).

Sai: The teacher to who I spoke was very helpful.
Đúng: ✓ The teacher to whom I spoke was very helpful.
Sau giới từ, chỉ người dùng whom.
Sai: The house in that we live is quite old.
Đúng: ✓ The house in which we live is quite old.
Không dùng that sau giới từ.
Sai: The city in which I was born in is famous for its food.
Đúng: ✓ The city in which I was born is famous for its food.
Giới từ đã đứng trước which thì không lặp ở cuối.
Sai: I have many friends, most of them live abroad.
Đúng: ✓ I have many friends, most of whom live abroad.
Nối vào câu trước bằng dấu phẩy phải dùng of whom.
