Sau bài này bạn sẽ
- chọn động từ tường thuật hợp với ý người nói (khuyên, xin lỗi, buộc tội, từ chối…).
- dùng đúng cấu trúc đi sau: to V, sb + to V, V-ing, giới từ + V-ing, that.
- tránh lỗi “suggest sb to do”.
Vì sao không chỉ dùng said?
Said chỉ cho biết ai nói gì. Động từ tường thuật cho biết luôn mục đích của lời nói: đề nghị, phủ nhận, thừa nhận, buộc tội, xin lỗi…
“I didn't take your phone,” he said. → He denied taking my phone.
Mỗi động từ đi với một cấu trúc riêng — phải học theo cụm, không học từ đơn lẻ.

Những điểm hay sai
- suggest: suggest + V-ing hoặc suggest that sb (should) + V. Không nói suggest sb to do.
- deny / admit / apologise for / accuse of + V-ing hoặc having + V3 (nhấn việc đã xảy ra): He admitted having lied.
- Phủ định: not đứng ngay trước to V hay V-ing: warn sb not to go, suggest not going.
- insist on + V-ing, không dùng insist to do.
- Sau giới từ (for, of, on) luôn là V-ing.

Lỗi hay gặp
Sai: He suggested me to apply for the job.
Đúng: ✓ He suggested that I should apply for the job.
Suggest không đi với sb + to V; dùng that + mệnh đề hoặc suggest + V-ing.
Sai: She denied to take the money.
Đúng: ✓ She denied taking the money.
Deny + V-ing (hoặc having + V3).
Sai: They accused him for cheating.
Đúng: ✓ They accused him of cheating.
Accuse sb of + V-ing; blame sb for mới dùng for.
Sai: He insisted to pay the bill.
Đúng: ✓ He insisted on paying the bill.
Insist on + V-ing.
