Although / even though + mệnh đề
Although (mặc dù) nối hai ý trái ngược trong cùng một câu, theo sau là mệnh đề (chủ ngữ + động từ).
- Đứng đầu câu thì có dấu phẩy sau vế đó: Although the flat is small, it is very bright.
- Đứng giữa câu thường không cần dấu phẩy: We went out although it was raining.
- Even though nhấn mạnh hơn; though thân mật hơn, hay dùng khi nói.
- Không dùng although và but trong cùng một câu (tiếng Việt nói “tuy… nhưng…”, tiếng Anh chỉ chọn một).

Despite / in spite of và however
- Despite = in spite of, theo sau là danh từ hoặc V-ing. Despite không có of; in spite of phải đủ ba từ.
- Muốn dùng mệnh đề sau despite thì thêm the fact that: despite the fact that he studied hard.
- However (tuy nhiên) nối hai câu: dấu chấm hoặc dấu chấm phẩy trước, dấu phẩy sau: The phone is expensive. However, it sells well. Có thể đứng giữa câu, giữa hai dấu phẩy: The plan, however, was too expensive.
- Không nối hai mệnh đề chỉ bằng dấu phẩy + however như với but.

Although my hometown is small, it has a beautiful beach.
Dù quê tôi nhỏ, ở đó có một bãi biển đẹp.although + mệnh đề, dấu phẩy sau vế đầu
I still enjoyed the trip even though it rained every day.
Tôi vẫn thích chuyến đi dù ngày nào trời cũng mưa.even though nhấn mạnh hơn
Despite the traffic, we arrived at the airport on time.
Dù kẹt xe, chúng tôi vẫn đến sân bay đúng giờ.despite + danh từ
In spite of having a cold, Lan went to her English class.
Dù bị cảm, Lan vẫn đi học tiếng Anh.in spite of + V-ing
Despite the fact that he studied hard, Nam didn't get a high score.

although và but không đi cùng nhau; chỉ giữ một từ.
Sai: Despite of the rain, they played football.
Đúng: ✓ Despite the rain, they played football.
despite không có of; nếu muốn có of thì dùng in spite of.
Sai: Despite it was cold, we swam in the sea.
Đúng: ✓ Although it was cold, we swam in the sea.
despite không đi trực tiếp với mệnh đề; dùng although hoặc despite the fact that.
Sai: The phone is expensive, however it sells well.
Đúng: ✓ The phone is expensive. However, it sells well.
however không nối hai mệnh đề bằng dấu phẩy như but; tách câu và đặt dấu phẩy sau however.
