Tính từ có mức độ và không có mức độ
Tính từ có mức độ (gradable) diễn tả tính chất có thể nhiều hay ít: cold, tired, important, expensive. Ta nói được a bit cold, very cold, colder.
Tính từ không có mức độ (non-gradable) gồm hai loại:
- Tính từ cực điểm: đã mang sẵn nghĩa “rất”: freezing (= very cold), exhausted (= very tired), essential (= very important), enormous, furious, delicious.
- Tính từ tuyệt đối: hoặc có hoặc không, không có “hơi”: impossible, unique, dead, complete, và tính từ phân loại như annual, medical, digital.

Quy tắc và lưu ý
- Không dùng very với tính từ cực điểm: không nói very exhausted, very enormous; nói absolutely exhausted hoặc really exhausted.
- Không dùng absolutely, utterly với tính từ có mức độ: không nói absolutely tired; nói very / extremely tired.
- Tính từ tuyệt đối không có so sánh hơn và văn viết chuẩn không thêm very: a unique opportunity.
- Vài tính từ dùng được cả hai kiểu, nghĩa đổi nhẹ: very different (khác nhiều), completely different (khác hẳn).

Lỗi hay gặp
Sai: The flight was very exhausting.
Đúng: ✓ The flight was absolutely exhausting.
exhausting là tính từ cực điểm, không đi với very; dùng absolutely hoặc really.
Sai: I was absolutely tired after the exam.
Đúng: ✓ I was extremely tired after the exam.
tired là tính từ có mức độ, đi với very / extremely, không đi với absolutely.
Sai: This is a very unique chance to study abroad.
Đúng: ✓ This is a unique chance to study abroad.
unique là tính từ tuyệt đối (duy nhất), văn viết chuẩn không thêm very.
Sai: The film was highly funny.
Đúng: ✓ The film was very funny.
highly chỉ đi với một nhóm tính từ (likely, effective, qualified…), không dùng với funny, good, cold.
